"A Love For People"
February 18, 2001

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Two observations:
1) We are to love others like He loves us.
2) Our love for others indicates our love for God.

Luke 10:26-28 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? [27] And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. [28] And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
Leviticus 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.
Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Jesus demonstrated the following attitude:

Nothing to prove.

Nothing to lose.

Nothing to hide.

What must we do to love as He loved?

Allow the love of God that is in us at the new birth to be shed abroad in our heart by staying filled with the Holy Spirit, because this is how it is shed abroad.

John 13:1-17 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. [2] And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; [3] Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; [4] He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. [5] After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. [6] Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? [7] Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. [8] Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. [9] Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. [10] Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. [11] For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. [12] So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? [13] Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. [14] If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. [15] For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. [16] Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. [17] If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

Matthew 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Jesus and Pilate both took water in basins; Jesus to become a servant and wash the disciples' feet and be the example, of servanthood to them and Pilate to show that he wished to have no part in Jesus.

Jesus said that we have no part with Him unless we let Him wash our feet. We love Him because He first loved us! (I John 4:19)

In I Corinthians 9, Paul gives us some clues about building bridges of love that can bear the weight of truth. He became a "neighbor" to the motley crew in the port town of Corinth. "...I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more."

It is truly more blessed to give than to receive.

When we give, it is given to us: "...good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over...".

These are the things we need to keep in mind:

Abandonment of our "rights".

Acceptance of responsibility.

Acceptance of the role of a servant.

Adjustment to the people's needs.

Anticipation of rewards. Just as when a woman is expecting a baby---she is anticipating excitedly---and willing to go through the pain of labor to get the reward!
