"What Happens When We See God"
February 25, 2001
Doyle Barnett

Isaiah 6:1-13 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. [2] Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. [3] And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. [4] And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. [5] Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. [6] Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: [7] And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. [8] Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. [9] And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. [10] Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. [11] Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, [12] And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. [13] But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Why do we fail to see God clearly?
Rebellion against God.
In Isaiah 6 the nation of Israel was very prosperous at that time, and during times of prosperity--when everything is going well--we tend to be tempted to think that we don't need God, and we are tempted not to seek Him.
We need to stay turned towards God. We need to hear from Him on a daily basis.
Most of God's people go through a cycle like this:
We are reckless---get into rebellion---this brings us to ruin---then we repent---we are revived---God restores us and begins to bless us---then we think we don't need Him and we repeat the cycle.

We limit God.

We tend to "think" God is a certain way or is going to do something a certain way, and when He does it differently from our thinking, we learn His ways--we get to KNOW Him.

As in Naaman's case. He didn't think God would want him to wash in a dirty river when there were perfectly good clean rivers in which to wash. But when He did it God's way, he was healed. He would not have gotten the desired result his own way.

We tend to "see" God through ourselves.

We think, many times, because we are a certain way, that God must be that way too. We need to go to God's Word and see how God really is, and not let our "thinking" get in the way. We must KNOW!!

We tend to "see" God through our parents.

We think because our parents do certain ways, that those are God's ways. This "colors" our perception of God.

We tend to "see" God through who or what we are around.

If we are around people who are telling us God is a certain way and it doesn't line up with God's Word, then we have a wrong perception of God.

We tend to "see" God through our experience.

If our experience tells us one thing and the Word tells us something else, we need to always remember that God's Word is the TRUTH!!

Many times we "jump to conclusions" about the character of God. Instead, we need to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us through the things that happen in our lives. He wants to give us wisdom and understanding. Many times we don't understand because of our preconceived idea of how God operates, instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to teach us how God operates---teach us His ways. Many times we don't understand the workings of the Holy Spirit, and instead of letting Him teach us we "write it off".

When we see God clearly, we will confess sin readily.

When we see God clearly, we will change.

When we see God clearly, it will bring more of a committment to Him.

We need each other to be balanced. God manifests through each member of His body, and we can "see" God in each part.

When we see God, we experience His LOVE.
