"How To Know God's Will and Do It"
February 4, 2001
Doyle Barnett

Proverbs 16:1-4 The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord. [2] All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits. [3] Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established. [4] The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

There are basically three things that make you think what God's will is.
1) Your background--the way we are raised influences our thinking about what God's will is in our lives.
2) Your personality--we have strengths and weaknesses in our personalities, and these affect what we think also.
3) The direction you are going in life--if we have already committed our lives to the Lord, then He has something to work with, but the level of our committment will determine how much of His will we do.(or how much of our will we relinquish to Him)

FIVE words to help you find God's will--

1) Process
Typical process is this-- *I tell God my intentions *God responds *I bargain with God *I give up *God begins to reveal His will for me

2)Potential

What are your gifts?

*Spiritual--we need to know what spiritual gifts the Lord has given to us so that we can operate in them. Knowledge brings freedom.

*Talents--we all have been given at least one talent--need to discern what this is/these are and use them.

---3 things will evidence your gift from God--- 1. You will be good at it.

2. You will have an opportunity to use it/them.

3. You will love to do it.

Question? Is God working in my life?

1 Cor. 1:26-27 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: [27] But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

**Power without potential is better than potential without power!!

In the beginning...what we are is God's gift to us.

In the end...what we become is our gift to God.

3) Purpose

When you understand that you CAN change the world, your life will never be the same again.

George Washington Carver said,"No individual has any right to come into the world and go out of it without leaving behind his/her distinct and legitimate reasons for having passed through it."

4)Prioritizing
God always provides enough time to accomplish His plans.

6 Principles for prioritizing--

1. God Principle--Is it pleasing to God?

2. Home Principle--Is it best for my family?

3. Time Principle--Does it have eternal value?

4. Influence Principle--What will be the results of it multiplying? How is it influencing those around me?

5. Potential Principle--Does it utilize my gifts?

6. People Principle--What will it produce in others when they join me?

5) Proceed

Start doing something. It is hard to actually know God's will unless we begin. Sometimes we have to start out and then we find out if we really heard from God or not. But if we don't start, we will never do anything!
