"Intimacy With God"
January 14, 2001

John 15:12-16 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. [13] Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [14] Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. [15] Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. [16] Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

What draws us to others?

Encouragement, appreciation, forgiveness, listening, and understanding.

Four proofs or tests of friendship:

1) What you'll do for a friend-(v.13)-lay down your life.

2) What you'll tell a friend- everything--good and bad!

3)You love what they love. Common interests are usually what bring people together as friends.

4)You will fulfill their requests--when someone is your friend, it is your delight to do things for them, and to give things to them.

5 Myths that Americans have about knowing God:

1)The Good Deeds Myth.

This is the notion that activity in Christian service proves that I know God

2) The Good Life Myth.

This is the notion that regular church attendance earns God's favor, and makes me right with Him.

3)The Religion Myth.

This is the notion that praying every day and sharing other such religious things indicates that I know God.

4)The Feeling Myth.

This is the notion that if I feel close to God, then I must be.

5)The Knowledge Myth.

This is the notion that a good knowledge of the Bible means that I am a Christian and therefore know God.

Are you believing the truth or a myth about your relationship with God?

Jesus is the friend that sticks closer than a brother, and He wants to be our friend. He wants to show us all the things that the Father has given us! All we have to do, is believe that He wants to be with us and "draw near to Him". He is "standing at the door and knocking", and all we have to do is let Him in. He said He would come in and fellowship with us!
