"From Excuses to Excellence"
March 4, 2001
Doyle Barnett

Moses spent 40 years thinking he was somebody.

Moses spent 40 years learning he was nobody.

Moses spent 40 years discovering what God can do with nobody.

Three Lessons from the Burning Bush
1) God appears in the ordinary

It was not unusual for a bush to burn in the desert, but it was unusual for it not to be consumed. This is what God used to get Moses' attention.

2) God has to get our attention before He presents Himself to us.

We can't see God until He has our attention.

3) In God's presence the ground on which we stand is holy.

Four Things I Know About God--Ex. 3:1-5

1) God has enabled the past generations.

God reminded Moses that He was the God of his forefathers.

2) God knows--God does see and hear what is going on in our lives

3) God will act in His perfect timing.(v.8)

4) God will deliver His people by using other people.

Moses' Excuses:

1) Who am I? (Ex. 3:11)

Moses had a confidence problem. And God gave him a promise.

2) What shall I say to them? Moses had a content problem. God gave him a plan.

God's Plan:

i) He said, " Moses tell the people who I am."

ii) Reveal the faithfulness of God.

iii) Communicate to the leaders---tell them that God is concerned, tell them their possibilities, their responsibility and their potential problems.

iv) Watch God make up the difference.

3) What if they will not hear me?

Moses had a credibility problem. God gave him power.

4) I have never been eloquent.

Moses had a communication problem. God gave him a person-- a helper. The helper He gives us is the Holy Spirit.

Observations:

1) Past failures may cause us to be hesitant about doing the work of the Lord.

2) Past failures should cause us to see our weakness and rely on God.

3) God seldom calls us to any task that we can perform acceptably without Him.

4) The moment Moses quit making excuses, God began to solve his problems.
