"Trusting God: The Trust Test"
October 22, 2000
Doyle Barnett

Proverbs 3:1-10 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: [2] For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. [3] Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: [4] So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. [5] TRUST in the Lord with ALL thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. [7] Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. [8] It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. [9] Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: [10] So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

A.W. Tozer said,"The man of pseudo faith will fight for his verbal creed but refuse flatly to allow himself to get into a predicament where his future must depend upon that creed being true. He always provides himself with secondary ways of escape so he will have a way out if the roof caves in. What we need very badly these days is a company of Christians who are prepared to trust God as completely now as they know they must do at the last day."

In review:

"T" in trust stands for "take inventory".

"R" stands for recognizing that God is our source.

"U" stands for understanding God's principles.

* God being in charge!

*Give and grow--we grow by giving to others.

*Do it NOW!! Start right where you are. If you wait till you are perfect, you will never start!

*We are a debtor to God: to preach the gospel--we are to give others everything that we have received from the Lord!

*We can only keep what we GIVE away!(The Fountain of Youth Principle)

Pastor Doyle, this Sunday, began to go further into the principles under "U"--understanding God's principles.

*The Who's Number One? Principle causes us to ask ourselves if everything we have belongs to God. God deserves the first of everything He has given us to manage. (Matt. 26: 36-38)

*The Cheerful Attitude Principle. Stewardship begins with loving, NOT with giving. We can GIVE without LOVING, but we cannot LOVE without GIVING. Love asks, "How much can I give?" Legalism or religion asks, "How much do I have to give?"

*The Big Shovel Principle just means that you cannot out-give God! (Luke 6:38)and (II Cor.9:6-8)

*Our life is to be like a RIVER, not a RESERVOIR! There are 5 outlets of power in our lives: (1) through our life--what we are, (2) through our lips--what we say,(3) through our ministry--what we do,(4)through our money-- what we give, and (5)through our prayers--what we claim in Jesus' name!

*The Who Has Who? Principle. Until God in in control of my life, I am out of control!

Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

Jeremiah 17:5-8 Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. [6] For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. [7] Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. [8] For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

"T" stands for "test God's promises". God wants us to see that He is true to His Word. He will keep His Word, but we have to trust Him to see this come to pass in our lives. We can see this in the lives of many people in the Bible.

Noah trusted God in something that he had never experienced before. Rain. Noah had never seen rain, but he obeyed God anyway, and endured much ridicule for his trust.

Abraham trusted God in a very personal area--with the life of his only son!

Joshua trusted God in parting the waters of the Jordan a different way than Moses parted the waters of the Red Sea. He had to believe what the Lord told him, not what he had seen some other man of God do.

David did not trust in the counsel of men, but trusted in what the Lord had already tried and proved in his life. Saul wanted him to wear his armor and fight Goliath with his weapons, but David trusted in the Lord, and fought the way God had given him to fight.

We need to ask ourselves if God can trust us. What have we done with the things He has given to us? Are we proving ourselves trustworthy? If we are obedient, then we are passing the Trust Test!
